Laboratory Research for First-Years and Sophomores

Enrolled Princeton first-years and sophomores may conduct research in a laboratory during the academic year. Prior to the junior year, there is no formal mechanism for placing students in laboratories; rather it is left to the initiative of the interested student to contact the faculty member. First-years are cautioned against starting research until they have had at least one semester to become acclimated to academic life at Princeton.

Students should consult the faculty profiles to become familiar with the types of research being conducted in the department. Create a short-list of potential research laboratories. Contact faculty members to see if they are willing to accept a student into their laboratory. Set up an appointment to discuss the research, responsibilities and commitment. Specific and personal inquiries are more effective than global e-mails sent to the entire faculty.
