MOL 433 Biotechnology

This course will consider the principles, development, outcomes and future directions on therapeutic application of biotechnology, with particular emphasis on the interplay between basic research and clinical experience. Topics to be discussed include production of hormones and other therapeutic proteins, gene therapy, oncolytic viruses, and stem cells. Reading will be from the primary literature.

Reading/Writing assignments:
Reading: 4 to 6 papers per week. Writing: 3 short ( 5 pages) papers/proposals during the semester; paper in lieu of final exam.

Requirements/Grading:
Mid Term Exam - 20%
Take Home Final Exam - 40%
Papers - 30%
Class/Precept Participation - 10%

Other Requirements:
Open to Juniors and Seniors Only.

Prerequisites and Restrictions:
MOL 342 or MOL 345, or permission of the Instructor.
