Marciej Nogalski awarded the ACS postdoctoral fellowship

Dr. Maciej Nogalski, a postdoctoral fellow in the Shenk lab, was awarded the American Cancer Society Postdoctoral Fellowship for his project  "HCMV-mediated changes in cellular metabolism regulated by Sirtuin 1 and 6". Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) has been associated with several types of cancer.  The Shenk lab discovery that sirtuins are viral restriction factors combined with their known role in cancer, suggests that sirtuins are at the crossroads of regulatory networks critical in tumorigenesis and viral infection.  These studies will investigate the metabolic pathways regulated by sirtuin 1 and 6 in HCMV-infected normal and cancer cell, creating a possibility of identifying new targets to block both HCMV infection and tumorigenesis
