Bonnie L. Bassler

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and Squibb Professor of Molecular Biology, Department of Molecular Biology, Princeton University

Bonnie Bassler has made seminal studies on the process of cell-cell signaling in bacteria that have revolutionised the study of microbiology. Her work has transformed the way in which we consider bacterial cell interactions in nature. Namely, that bacteria behave as multicellular organisms. These findings have had significant impacts on concepts of infectious disease and have led to novel therapeutic strategies. Bassler is recognised internationally for her commitment to science education and has received numerous awards and elected honours. She is one of the most dynamic speakers in the sciences and communicates effectively with scientific and lay audiences alike.
