Augmin promotes meiotic meiotic spindle assembly and bipolarity

Acentrosomal spindles are assembled around microprinted chromatin-beads upon addition of Xenopus egg extract depleted of augmin. Imaging was performed with confocal laser scanning microscopy. Spindles forming in augmin-depleted extracts showed reduced rates of MT formation and were predominantly multipolar, revealing a function of augmin in stabilizing the bipolar shape of the acentrosomal meiotic spindle.
