Event Description

Experimentally tractable microbial communities are needed to bridge the gap between observing patterns of microbial diversity and defining the mechanisms that give rise to these patterns. We developed cheese rinds as model microbial communities by characterizing in situ patterns of diversity, culturing all dominant species, and developing a simple in vitro system for community reconstruction. We are now developing genetic, genomic, and chemical approaches to uncover the forces that shape microbial communities.
