CHARLES S. ZUKER is an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics and of Neuroscience in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, and a Senior fellow at the Janelia Farm Research Campus. He studies how the brain represents our sensory experiences and how it transforms reception into perception. His work has included the biology of photoreception, mechanoreception, and more recently taste reception.
Dr. Zuker is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Medicine, and has been honored with several awards including the Cogan Award for Vision Research, Columbia University’s W. Alden Spencer Award, and the International Flavor and Fragrances Award.
Receptors, Neurons, and Circuits: The Biology of Mammalian Taste
The taste system is one of our fundamental senses, responsible for detecting and responding to sweet, bitter, umami, salty, and sour stimuli. We study the logic of taste coding as a platform to understand how our brain creates an internal representation of the outside world and transforms sensory signals at the periphery into percepts, actions and complex behaviors.
