Seminar Topic

Computational Approaches for Genomic Medicine

The sequencing of the human genome and the development of new methods for acquiring biological data have changed the face of biomedical research. The use of computational approaches takes advantage of the availability of these data to develop new methods with the promise of improved understanding and treatment of disease. Moreover, it is important to deliver practical, accessible software tools to bring these methods to the general biomedical research community.

I will describe some of these approaches that leverage functional data including our recent work integrating high-level clinical and genomic features to stratify pediatric brain tumor patients into groups with high and low risk of relapse after treatment. The approach provides a more accurate and biologically interpretable model than previous models, and highlights possible future drug targets. It represents one of the few such predictors that generalized to a completely independent patient cohort. Finally, I will review the software that makes our methods available to the research community.
