MolBio Seminar Series

Speaker

Joerg VogelJörg Vogel
Institute of Molecular Infection Biology

Jörg Vogel is Professor and Chair of the Institute of Molecular Infection Biology (IMIB) at the University of Würzburg, Germany. His interest is in the discovery and functional characterization of small noncoding RNAs in pathogenic bacteria, and of microRNAs and long non-coding RNAs in eukaryotic hosts. This involves global approaches such as RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to identify regulatory RNAs and their targets, and biochemical and genetic analyses of the molecular mechanisms and physiological consequences of RNA-based regulation.

Seminar Topic

An RNA Perspective on Bad Microbes and Their Hosts

This talk will discuss emerging concepts of gene regulation by small noncoding RNAs in pathogenic bacteria; show how RNA deep sequencing technology has opened new avenues for the global discovery and functional study of diverse functional small RNAs in many bacterial species; introduce a new Dual RNA-seq approach which aims to take the study of host-pathogen interactions a major step further and enable us to analyse RNA expression changes in both bacterial pathogen and eukaryotic host simultaneously.

Research Lab

My laboratory of RNA Biology is interested in the discovery and functional characterization of small RNAs in pathogenic bacteria as well as of microRNAs and long noncoding RNAs in infected eukaryotic host cells. We use global approaches including deep sequencing, to identify regulatory RNAs and their targets, and biochemical and genetic analyses to decipher new molecular mechanisms and physiological consequences of RNA-based regulation.
