Confocal Facility Manager

Dr. Gary Laevsky has been with Princeton University since June of this year.  Previously, he was a Product Manager (Super Res, TIRF, and confocal) for Olympus, Senior Biosystems Applications Manager for Nikon, and an Imaging Applications Specialist for Andor Technology.  He completed his post-doctoral research at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla.  Dr. Laevsky received his Ph.D. in Cell Biology from The University of Connecticut.

Until recently optical imaging of biological structure was limited to the diffraction limit as defined by Ernst Abbe.  In recent years there has been an explosion of technologies that have broken the resolution limit constrained by diffraction.

I will discuss some of these technologies being commercialized, including Structured Illumination (SR), Localization (PALM, STORM, and GSD), and gated Stimulated Emission Depletion (gSTED), that allow for fast, live/fixed cell compatible resolution down to 20 nm.

In addition, the current state of the facility will be presented, as well as the status and types of upcoming demonstrations.  Following the seminar, a brief discussion will be held to discuss possible upgrades for the existing systems.

Seminar Topic

“Structured Illumination, gSTED, Localization, and Light Sheet Technologies coming to PU.
